It’s meant to be a little ghostie on my thumb, but I struggle at painting with a bobby pin. Also just general painting. But I’m awesome at being spirited! #hallowinning (at fall flat, Edinburgh)

Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman-Hughes, 1972 and 2014

Both by Dan Bagan

Wanna see my cry like a baby? Ask me who these women were.

Hughes’ father was beaten nearly to death by the KKK when she was a kid, and what does she do? Become an activist to try and stop that from happening to other people. She raised money to bail civil rights protesters out of jail. She helped women get out of abusive situations by providing shelter for them until they got on their feet. She founded an agency that helped women get to work without having to leave their children alone, because childcare in the 1970s? Not really a thing. In fact, a famous feminist line in the 70s was “every housewife is one man away from welfare.”

Then she teamed up with Steinman to found the Women’s Action Alliance, which created the first battered women’s shelters in history. They attacked women’s rights issues through boots on the ground activism, problem solving, and communication. They stomped over barriers of race and class to meet women where they were: mostly mothers who wanted better for themselves and their children.

These are women are who I always wanted to be.

Her courtesy delights everyone. She finds no excuse for people who indulge in being temperamental. She’s everything I knew she would be! She’s lovely, charming, intelligent, witty - a person of great understanding and loyalty. She’s so hospitable, so vital, so interested in so many things. She knows everything that’s happening in world events and is so well-informed beyond the present because she reads another book nearly every night. It’s a joy to know she has a grateful heart. Actually, she devotes much time and money to charities. There’s nothing artificial about Barbara. She has personal friends who are her family. But she refuses to have her generosity publicized. - Nolan Miller (fashion designer and friend)

In honor of my lovely parents’ birthdays, I went and found some pretty pictures and made a ‘Clarke/O’Malley Family, the 20s’ collage. See any resemblance?

"Oh, excuse me, madam. Sorry. This may seem strange, but have you seen a fallen star anywhere?"
"You’re funny."
"No, really, we’re in a crater. This must be where it fell."
